Dogs gone wild!

We've added a third dog to the mix -- but just temporarily.  Ronnie, a Jack Russell Terrier, is visiting for the weekend while a friend is out of town.  Ollie the puppy is happy to have another buddy.

Play, play, play:

Science Fair!

My daughter has been SO EXCITED about her science fair at her elementary school.  She was SO BUMMED when the fair was postponed because of a snow day last week.

We completed the experiment in January, and had the poster done by early February, so she has been ready for a while.  I'm so glad the night was a success!

Her topic was "Does the five-second rule really work?"  We dropped food on the floor, made homemade agar, swabbed for germs, and watched them grow in her closet heated to 90 degrees for several days. It was stinky, germy fun!  By the way... her conclusion was DON'T EAT ANYTHING that is dropped on the floor!

Here's a few photos from the fair:

Can you tell she likes neon colors?

Her fair poster was very popular because she brought food samples!

A big night at the elementary school!

Dogs imitating ostriches?

We always thought it was a little strange that Garrett, our greyhound, liked to sleep with his head under the couch.

We were even more surprised when we found our new puppy Ollie doing the same thing!!!

Anyone else have a dog who sleeps this way?

Girl Scout Engineers -- Go Blue!

My daughter and I had another Girl Scout outing -- just the two of us again (no troop). This one was at the University of Michigan North Campus.  The Society of Women Engineers (SWE) -- all undergrad engineering students at UM -- ran the event.  The girls loved working with college students -- they are much cooler than parents!  The engineering students did a really good "sell" convincing the girls that engineering is a great choice for college.

The girls completed all the requirements for the Junior Badge "Product Designer."  Amelia teamed up with two Juniors from other troops to finish the requirements of the badge.  The SWE students also gave the girls a tour of North Campus, including the new EECS (Electrical Engineering and Computer Science) building, Piedpont Commons, various computer labs, study areas and the library.  We also visited the 3D printing lab on campus, and they demonstrated how the printers work.  Very cool!

Here's a few pictures and a video of the event.

First the girls diagrammed a product, then came up with ideas to improve the design.
Tour time!  This is the new EECS building.

The bell tower on North Campus.

One of the panels from ENIAC, the first computer!

Checking out the 3D printers.

Some items made on a 3D printer.
Design time!  The girls had to design a vehicle that could carry 4 eggs down a slope (with a crash at the end) without the eggs cracking!

The girls did 3 test runs.  No eggs broke on the first run, then they improved the wheels, making the vehicle faster.  On the second run, two eggs cracked from a side collision with the wall.  The girls added some side protection before their third and final run -- no eggs broken!
Test run!
The girls' final design and test run -- all the eggs were safe!

The team -- they were very proud of their design.  And my daughter won the coin toss to take it home.

Their final design -- including names for all the eggs.  Yes -- all boys' names.  They decided that boys could be smashed for science.

Our new puppy, Ollie

We decided (well... I talked my hubby into...) to get a new puppy.  A vet who belongs to the greyhound adoption organization that we got Garrett (our other dog) from posted she had PUPPIES.  The puppies are greyhound mixes.  The mother is a greyhound, but the father is not verified -- but is likely a lab.  Since almost all greyhounds come from the race track, it is unusual to be able to adopt a greyhound puppy.

The family had to check them out, and quickly fell in love.  Our puppy, who was originally named Skipper (from Gilligan's Island), is a dark brindle.  We renamed him Ollie, which seems to fit him very well.  Anyone figure out the geeky reason for the name?  10 points if you figure it out!

Ollie has been with us for a few weeks;  he's adorable and 110% puppy.

Play, play, play, pee, poop, play, sleep.

He LOVES our other dog Garrett, but Garrett is slightly annoyed that this hyper little thing keeps invading his space.  We hope that as Ollie gets older Garrett will enjoy him a bit more.

Here's a few pictures of the adorable Ollie!

Can you resist the cute puppy face???

Hubby puppy love.

Yes, I know her pajama pants are too long.  She will not let me shorten them.

Granny's Tea Party

The ladies in our family gathered for a tea party at my mother's house a couple of weekends ago.  The girls got all prettied up, and Granny (my mom) even provided hats.  My daughter, despite being a tomboy, had a great time because she spent the night at Granny's the evening before -- and helped with all the baking and prep for the tea party.  Enjoy a few pictures from the event.

All the girls in their hats.  My niece decided to wear her Dr. Suess hat (that she made at school) because it was his birthday.

YUM!

My daughter's hat has lights!

Ready to sip tea (or hot chocolate) and enjoy all the treats!

Yummy Girl Scout event

I signed up my daughter for a Girl Scout activity.  She was the only one from her troop because she has asked me to sign her up for a few events solo -- just me and her.  This one was "Snacks and Simple Meals." She had a great time.  They made hummus, lemonade, banh mi (a Vietnamese sandwich -- she was WAY excited to tell everyone she was Vietnamese!), and fruit/marshmallow skewers.

Here's a few pics:
