It's a pillow! It's a pet! It's a Pillow Pet!

When I became a mom I thought I would *never* be that mom hunting down the "must have" toy of the season.

I lived through the Cabbage Patch Kid craze of the 1980s. Grandmothers beating each other down, crowds stampeding, young children clawing for the last Preemie. Ugh. Consumerism at its worst. And yes, I had a few Cabbage Patch Kids, including a Preemie. But I didn't get them the first buying season.

Then, two years ago (2009), my daughter saw this annoying commercial with an even more annoying jingle.

It's pillow!

And she was hooked.

It's a pet!

She wanted one.

It's a Pillow Pet!

BAD.

The commercial said just go to the website to order them; only $19.99! So, I suggested the purchase to my friend as a birthday present for my daughter (she has a December birthday). My friend, N, took my offer; after all -- online shopping was easy.  Right? I gave her a list of top choice Pillow Pet animals: the dolphin, the ladybug and the bumblebee.

A few days later, N called me back with bad news: they were sold out of all the top choices, so she ordered a panda. They were sold out of all but 2 or 3 of the animals!

That's when I realized these stuffed things were "the toy" to have.

But, it's all good. Because N has one on order.

Except.

A few days later she gets an email saying her purchase is on BACK ORDER. What? Obviously this company underestimated the popularity of their jingle!

ACK!

Fortunately, a Panda did show up for Amelia's birthday.  My daughter opens her present at her party -- BAM! She loves it. N gets the credit for locating the first of many Pillow Pets.

But, Christmas is still coming -- and guess what my little girl asks Santa for? ANOTHER Pillow Pet!

What? ONE is not enough child?

What to do, what do to.

So, Hubby went on on the hunt for the rare beast called a Pillow Pet. We heard someone was stocking Pillow Pets at the mall. Victory! A unicorn Pillow Pet! Actually, it might have been a knock-off, but who cares? No one I know has actually seen a real one at this point!

Santa delivers.

Fast forward to this Christmas, and the Pillow Pet craze is still in full force. Except this year these things are EVERYWHERE! No problem locating a dolphin for my darling daughter, as well as a dog for my dear son (he also picked up a monkey during the year because he loved his sister's Pillow Pets SO MUCH!).

Pillow Pet stats for the kt moxie household:
  • Daughter: one unicorn, one panda, one dolphin
  • Son: one monkey, one dog

This post was prompted by Working Mom Wednesday.  The prompt was to tell a story from this Christmas or a previous Christmas.

LOL! Jack got 2 pillow pets this year, though I am told one is a knock-off. Whatever, he is 14 months and can't tell the difference. I don't know what it is about them, but he loves them. Shows how much I know, I thought they looked pretty stupid!! I am glad he is still at an age where he can't ask for things. It makes shopping much easier!!
We have a bee and monkey!

yeah I don't get it, everyone in the plush industry is working hard to knock this off! I've made several licensed characters already. It's so silly but your photos are adorable. Who can put a price on child love?

Oh, the Cabbage Patch craze! I remember feeling so bummed out when all of my friends got one for Christmas, and I didn't.

But at least they were smaller than pillow pets. My daughter got yet another for Christmas, and now she wants to lug that thing to school. Every day. Ugh.

It's a horse! It's a blue cow! We don't really know what the heck it is, but it's a knock-off Pillow Pet! And DS couldn't care less. He's rather drag around my skirt and pretend to take a nap on it than use his fake pillow-pet.

And PS- I had a homemade Cabbage Patch named Katie when I was 5. My mommy made her just for me.

Very cute post!

So funny! My little guy has the brown dog... he suckered me into it before I even knew it was a craze. Bed Bath and Beyond had loads of them.
